Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion-Duodenal Switch
What is a Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion-Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS)?
In Biliopancreatic Diversion-Duodenal Switch, a portion of the small intestine is bypassed by connecting the duodenum to the ileum and doing a Sleeve Gastrectomy on the stomach. It can be an initial bariatric operation or an operation for patients who already had a sleeve gastrectomy.
How does it work?
The reduced stomach size helps you to feel full sooner and limits the amount of food you can eat. Food passes through the digestive tract from the beginning to the duodenum to the ileum, bypassing the duodenum, jejunum and part of the ileum. This decreases the absorption of nutrients. Your appetite will also decrease.
